Statistics Finland is active in international cooperation. International cooperation aims to:
- improve the comparability of statistics
- promote the use of international statistical data
- develop statistics, statistical concepts and methods.
Exchanging experiences with the statistical actors of other countries provides useful insights for our own development work.
An important part of international cooperation is supporting the statistical services of less developed countries.
International cooperation forums
The field of statistics is developed in international cooperation forums. The UN is the global umbrella organisation in the field of statistics, and European statistics are developed on the EU level. Many statistical methods and main outlines of the classifications used in the compilation of statistics are defined on these levels.
We also cooperate with the national statistical institutes of other countries and especially the national statistical institutes of other Nordic countries are important cooperation partners for us. For example, the PxWeb database used in the dissemination of our statistics is the result of Nordic joint development.
Statistics Finland is part of the European Statistical System
Reliable and comparable statistical data are of key importance to the activity of the European Union. In addition to the institutions of the EU, European statistics are used by other decision-makers, researchers, enterprises, the media and citizens.
The European Statistical System (ESS) was developed for the production of reliable and comparable statistics. The key actors of the system are Eurostat, the Statistical Office of the European Union, and the national statistical institutes of the EU Member States, such as Statistics Finland.
