Record high life expectancies and numerous other stories – Statistical Yearbook of Finland 2025 tells about us
NewsThe Statistical Yearbook of Finland, which celebrates Statistics Finland's 160th anniversary, provides an extensive overview of the statistics on Finland and Finnish society. The Yearbook contains long time series that give an overall picture of the development of our society. The Yearbook tells stories about us – also for future generations.
The Yearbook contains the latest statistical time series, regional statistics and comparison data from other countries. The Yearbook is trilingual (Finnish, Swedish, English) and it has altogether 444 tables, statistical graphs or thematic maps.
The content of the Yearbook is a result of cooperation between several operators, in which Statistics Finland has acted as the coordinating statistical agency.
The first Statistical Yearbook of Finland was published in 1879. Thus, it already turns 146 years old.
Some selections from the statistical reference year 2024:
• At the end of the year, Finland's population was 5,635,971, of whom 14.6 per cent were aged under 15 and 23.6 per cent were aged 65 or older.
• The number of children born was 43,720 and that of deaths 58,267. The number of deaths has exceeded the number of births in eight previous years as well.
• The life expectancy of newborn boys was 79.6 years and that of girls 84.8 years. The figures are the highest in the measuring history.
• In all, 63,965 persons moved to Finland and 16,914 persons emigrated from the country. Finns moved 578,126 times within municipalities. Altogether 288,939 intermunicipal moves were made.
• At the end of the year, there were 547,913 families with underage children, that is, families with at least one child aged under 18 living at home. The average size of a family with underage children was 3.68 persons.
• The total number of dwellings was 3.2 million, 54 per cent of which were owner-occupied dwellings and 33 per cent rental dwellings.
• Around 1.9 million students studied in 3,103 educational institutions. Altogether 240,953 qualifications were attained, of which 75,506 were vocational qualifications.
• There were 2.6 million employed and 238,000 unemployed persons aged 15 to 74. The rate of unemployment was 8.4 per cent.
• The average total pension of Finnish residents receiving their own pension was EUR 2,100 per month. The average pension of women was EUR 1,893 per month and that of men EUR 2,349 per month.
• Central government debt amounted to EUR 169.4 billion. The debt per capita totalled EUR 29,995.
