UN working group develops common terminology for data governance
NewsA two-year working group on data governance has been established under the United Nations Statistical Commission. Data governance helps to ensure that statistics are reliable, comparable and ethically produced.
The task of the working group is to develop a common set of terminology around data governance. The aim is to facilitate the exchange of national practices and experiences at regional and global levels.
“Today, data masses are broader and more up-to-date than before. Data governance plays a pivotal role in the production of reliable statistics. Although we at statistical offices process a lot of data, we have not had a common set of terminology in this area and thus we have not been able to compare our modes of operation between countries. The work of the working group is pioneering and it is an honour to steer this work,” says Statistics Finland's Deputy Director General Mari Ylä-Jarkko, who chairs the working group together with the President of the Saudi Arabian General Authority for Statistics.
The working group will propose how the Statistical Commission could support national statistical offices to respond to rapid technological changes and the growing availability of data from multiple sources. In its work, the working group will make use of the current principles of data governance. The working group reports back to the United Nations Statistical Commission.
