Trips abroad one fifth fewer in summer 2022 than before the pandemic

The number of leisure trips abroad recorded in the statistics in May to August 2022 was four times higher compared to the corresponding period of the previous year. In summer 2022, the destinations of trips abroad were also further away in Europe than in the summer before, when three out of four trips abroad were made to the Nordic countries and Baltic countries. The number of domestic leisure trips with overnight stay decreased by almost 15 per cent from summer 2021. These figures are preliminary data from Statistics Finland's statistics on Finnish travel.

- The total number of leisure trips with overnight stay in Finland and abroad in summer (May to August) 2022 was 13.6 million. The number is roughly the same as in the corresponding period of the previous year.
- The number of overnight stays recorded for leisure trips abroad was 15.8 million, which is more than triple compared with overnight stays in summer 2021.
- In addition to the long-standing favourites Estonia and Sweden, Greece surpassed Spain to become the third most popular destination country.
- Nearly one fifth fewer nights were spent at own free-time residences in Finland than in the summer before, but the number of overnight stays at free-time residences was still over one-half higher than in summer 2019.
