Number of domestic overnight stays was 7 per cent higher in March 2022 than in March 2019

In total, 1.39 million overnight stays were recorded for resident tourists and 0.38 million overnight stays for non-resident tourists in March 2022. The number of nights spent by resident tourists was 71 per cent higher than in March 2021. The number of overnight stays by non-resident tourists was eightfold compared to the previous year. The total number of overnight stays in March 2022 was five per cent lower than in March 2019 before the coronavirus pandemic. These figures are preliminary data from Statistics Finland's accommodation statistics.

  • The number of overnight stays by resident tourists exceeded the pre-pandemic level most clearly in Lapland, North Ostrobothnia and Pirkanmaa.
  • The number of overnight stays by non-resident tourists was one third lower than in March 2019.
  • Among non-resident tourist groups, the French and German were the biggest ones. Most overnight stays by non-resident tourists were recorded in Lapland.
  • The hotel occupancy rates were 23 percentage points higher than in March of last year. The hotel occupancy rate was highest in Kainuu.
  • The average price of a hotel room was EUR 114 in March 2022. The average prices have risen slightly above the pre-pandemic level.
