According to Statistics Finland, greenhouse gas emissions produced by Finns fell in 2020. Emissions of impurities also decreased slightly. Greenhouse gas emissions produced by Finns in Finland and abroad amounted to 49 million tonnes, 14 per cent less than in the previous year. The main reasons behind the fall were the 31 per cent reduction in emissions from transportation and storage and the 21 per cent reduction in emissions from energy supply.

Key selections

  • Greenhouse gas emissions fell by 14 per cent in 2020.
  • Nitrogen oxide and carbon monoxide emissions fell by around one fifth in 2020.
  • Emissions in the transportation and storage industry decreased by nearly one third and those in energy supply by around one fifth.
  • The fall in emissions is explained by the effects of the corona pandemic, which particularly concerned transportation and storage. Emissions from energy supply diminished as a result of the warm weather.
