Total energy consumption decreased by 10 per cent in January to June

release | Energy supply and consumption 2022, 2nd quarter

According to Statistics Finland's preliminary data, total energy consumption in January to June amounted to 622 petajoule (PJ), which was 10 per cent less than in the corresponding period last year. The mild weather and the Paperworkers’ Union’s strike decreased the demand for energy especially in the first quarter. Russia’s attack on Ukraine has affected the energy market and led to rises in energy prices.

Key selections

  • The record high prices of liquid fuels in transport are also visible in consumption. In the second quarter, seven per cent less motor gasoline and four per cent less diesel was consumed than in the year before.
  • The consumption of natural gas decreased most of all energy sources, by 46 per cent. Imports of pipeline gas from Russia were cut off in May.
  • Of renewable energy sources, the consumption of wood fuels went down most, by 23 per cent. The decrease in the consumption of wood fuels was due to the Paperworkers’ Union’s strike, which lasted throughout the first quarter of the year.
  • Total electricity consumption was 42 terawatt hours (TWh) or five per cent lower than one year earlier. Imports of electricity from Russia ceased in May.
  • Carbon dioxide emissions from the energy use of fuels decreased by nine per cent compared to January to June last year.
