Overnight stays in Lapland growing strongly in January 2023
release | Accommodation statistics 2023, JanuaryAccording to Statistics Finland's preliminary data, the number of nights spent by tourists was 48 per cent higher in January 2023 than one year earlier. In total, one million overnight stays were recorded for resident tourists, which is 44 per cent more than in January 2022. For non-resident tourists, 0.53 million overnight stays were recorded, which is 55 per cent more than one year earlier. However, the total number of overnight stays was around nine per cent lower than in January 2020 before the pandemic.

- The majority of overnight stays by foreign visitors were recorded in Lapland, where the number of overnight stays by foreign tourists was almost as high as in January 2020 prior to the pandemic.
- The highest numbers of foreign visitors came from France, Germany and Great Britain. Altogether 69 per cent of overnight stays by visitors from these countries were recorded in Lapland.
- In relative terms, overnight stays have increased most in Pirkanmaa, where the number of overnight stays was 15 per cent higher than in January 2020.
- The occupancy rate of hotel rooms was 45 per cent. Compared to January 2022, the occupancy rate grew by 17 percentage points.
- The average price of a hotel room was EUR 121, having been EUR 111 one year earlier. The price of a hotel room was highest in Lapland, EUR 182.
