Number of nights spent at accommodation establishments on level with the previous year in May 2023

According to Statistics Finland's preliminary data, 1.57 million overnight stays were recorded in May 2023, of which 1.21 million were overnight stays by resident tourists. The total number of overnight stays increased by two per cent from the year before. The number of overnight stays by resident tourists decreased by two per cent compared to May 2022 and that of overnight stays by non-resident tourists increased by 14 per cent.

Key selections

  • In May 2023, the number of overnight stays by tourists was highest in Uusimaa. The second highest number of overnight stays was recorded in Pirkanmaa, where the Ice Hockey World Championship was held.
  • The number of overnight stays by resident tourists grew most in relative terms in South Savo, by 14 per cent, and Central Finland, by 10 per cent.
  • Most of the foreign visitors came from Sweden, Germany and the United States.
  • The occupancy rate of hotel rooms was 53 per cent, which is two percentage points higher than in May 2022.
  • The average price of a hotel room was EUR 121, having been EUR 116 one year earlier. The average price was highest in Pirkanmaa, EUR 153.
