Number of reported sexual offences grew by 23 per cent in January to September 2023

According to Statistics Finland's preliminary data, a total of 374,700 offences against the Criminal Code were recorded by the police, customs and border guard during January to September 2023. This is 4.8 per cent more than one year earlier. Slightly over 1,000 rapes as defined in the new legislation on sexual offences were recorded.

  • The number of recorded offences against life was 44, which is seven fewer than in January to September 2022.
  • The legislation on sexual offences was amended on 1 January 2023.
  • Altogether 846 cases of sexual harassment referred to in the new legislation were reported, of which 274 were committed on the Internet.
  • In all, 99 cases of non-consensual dissemination of sexual images were reported, of which 83 were committed on the Internet.
