According to Statistics Finland, housing costs burdened 5.1 per cent of persons belonging to households in 2021. The differences were big between the groups according to the household's life-cycle. In relative terms, one-person households were most burdened by housing costs, 13.4 per cent of them in 2021.

Key selections

  • In all, 13.4 per cent of one-person households, 23.6 per cent of those aged under 35 years, 10.5 per cent of those aged 35 to 64 and 9.8 per cent of those aged 65 or over, were burdened by housing costs. In this case, the household's housing costs are over 40 per cent of disposable monetary income (excl. housing allowances received). 
  • The income shares of housing costs were this high for 2.9 per cent of persons in households of childless couples and for 1.6 per cent of persons in families with children.
  • According to the form of tenure of the dwelling, 13.0 per cent of those living in rental
    dwellings and 1.7 per cent of those living in owner-occupied dwellings were burdened by housing costs. 
  • Of one-person households living in rental dwellings 23.6 per cent were burdened by housing costs. In the other groups according to the household's life-cycle living in rental dwellings fewer were burdened by housing costs. In households of childless couples, they accounted for around seven per cent of persons and in families with children for close on four per cent.
  • In 2021, the share of persons burdened by housing costs grew by one percentage point from the previous year, the change was bigger in rental dwellings than in owner-occupied
    dwellings.
