According to Statistics Finland, the profitability of enterprises weakened in all main industries measured by operating margin in 2023. The operating margin weakened most in industry (TOL B to E), where the operating margin percentage decreased from 11.2 to 10.2 per cent, or by one percentage point.

Key selections

  • There were 580,000 enterprises in 2023. The number of enterprises increased by 1.5 per cent from 2022.
  • In 2023, the profitability in industry weakened especially in the forest industry (TOL 16 to 17) and in the chemical industry (TOL 19 to 22).
  • Among service industries, the profitability improved particularly in transportation and storage (TOL H) and in human health and social work activities (TOL Q) in 2023.
  • The figures in the release are based on enterprise unit level data from which items between legal units belonging to the enterprise unit have been eliminated. Figures based on legal units can be found in their own database tables.
