Total energy consumption grew by 2 per cent in January to September 2024

According to Statistics Finland's preliminary data, total energy consumption in January to September amounted to 964 petajoules (PJ), which was two per cent more than one year before. Of individual energy sources, the consumption of natural gas grew most, by 29 per cent, and the consumption of hard coal decreased most, by 36 per cent. In the third quarter of the year, two per cent more energy was consumed compared to the year before.

  • The consumption of renewable energy totalled 419 PJ, which was five per cent more than in last year's January to September.
  • The combined consumption of fossil fuels and peat amounted to 278 PJ, which was three per cent less than in the year before.
  • Total electricity consumption was 61 terawatt hours (TWh) or seven per cent more than in January to September of last year.
  • Carbon dioxide emissions from the energy use of fuels amounted to 19 million tonnes, which was four per cent less than in the year before.
