Mortality decreased in all largest cause of death groups in 2024

According to Statistics Finland, age-standardised mortality decreased by over seven per cent in 2024 from the previous year. Mortality from diseases of the circulatory system, memory disorders and neoplasms decreased. Only one per cent of deaths were caused by the coronavirus disease. Mortality caused by alcohol and accidents also decreased from 2023. By contrast, suicide mortality remained unchanged.


Key selections

  • Age-standardised mortality was around 2.5 per cent lower in 2024 than in 2019 before the coronavirus pandemic.
  • Mortality among working-age people, that is, persons aged 15 to 64, decreased by nearly seven per cent from the previous year and by six per cent from 2019.
  • In all, 18,400 persons died from diseases of the circulatory system. This is close on 1,000 fewer than in 2023.
  • Alcohol mortality decreased by 7.6 per cent from the previous year. A total of 1,600 persons died from alcohol-related causes.
  • The coronavirus disease caused under 700 deaths in 2024.
