Total energy consumption decreased by 4.5 per cent in the first quarter of 2025

According to Statistics Finland's preliminary data, total energy consumption in January to March amounted to 358 petajoule (PJ), which was four per cent less than in the corresponding period last year. The consumption of renewable energy went up by seven per cent from the year before. The consumption of fossil fuels decreased in all categories.

  • The consumption of renewable energy totalled 171 petajoule (PJ) in the first quarter of 2025, or seven per cent more than one year earlier.
  • The combined consumption of fossil fuels and peat amounted to 94 PJ, or 18 per cent less than in the year before.
  • Total electricity consumption was 24 terawatt hours (TWh) or three per cent less than in January to March of the previous year.
  • Carbon dioxide emissions from the energy use of fuels amounted to seven million tonnes, which was 17 per cent less than in the year before.
