Total energy consumption decreased by one per cent in January to September 2025

According to Statistics Finland's preliminary data, total energy consumption in January to September amounted to 950 petajoules (PJ), which was one per cent less than one year before. The consumption of fossil fuels decreased in all categories. Total electricity consumption increased by one per cent from the year before.

  • The consumption of renewable energy totalled 424 petajoule (PJ) in January to September 2025, which was four per cent more than one year earlier.
  • The combined consumption of fossil fuels and peat amounted to 258 PJ, which was nine per cent less than in the year before.
  • Total electricity consumption was 62 terawatt hours (TWh) or one per cent more than in January to September of last year.
  • Carbon dioxide emissions from the energy use of fuels amounted to 18 million tonnes, which was seven per cent less than in the year before.
