Rail freight traffic increased by 10 per cent in the year 2025

According to Statistics Finland, 89.7 million trips in passenger traffic were made and 29.2 million tonnes of freight were transported by Finnish rail in 2025. The number of trips in passenger traffic grew by six per cent compared to the previous year. The volume of freight transport increased by 10 per cent.

  • In 2025, altogether 5 million more trips in passenger traffic by rail were made than in 2024. The number of passengers in local traffic increased by six per cent and that in long-distance traffic by five per cent.
  • The transport performance of freight transport totalled 8.5 billion tonne-kilometres, which was three per cent more than in 2024.
  • Eight persons died and two person were seriously injured in railway accidents. The number of deaths and serious injuries doubled from preceding year.
  • The share of the electric tractive stock in train-kilometres rose to 92 per cent. The train-kilometres increased three per cent for electric locomotive and nine per cent for electric railcars.
