Slight rise in the birth rate in 2025

According to Statistics Finland, women's total fertility rate rose to 1.30 children in 2025, while it was 1.25 in 2024. The birth rate rose most in Åland, South Savo, Kymenlaakso and Kainuu. The birth rate was still highest in the regions of Ostrobothnia and Åland in 2025.

  • The total fertility rate in 2022 to 2025 was lowest in Turku (1.03), Tampere (1.03) and Helsinki (1.08) when comparing the largest towns.
  • The total fertility rate of Finnish-speaking women was 1.29 children, that of Swedish speakers 1.51 children and that of foreign-language speakers 1.37 children in 2025.
  • In all, 18 per cent of children born in 2025 were born to foreign-language speaking mothers. The largest foreign-language groups were Russian, Arabic, Somali and English speakers.
  • The number of first-born children rose by seven per cent, that of second-born children by three per cent and that of third-born children by six per cent from 2024.
