Number of comprehensive schools continued declining in 2025

According to Statistics Finland’s register of providers of education and register of educational institutions, there were 837 active providers of education and 3,045 educational institutions at the end of 2025. There were 1,922 active comprehensive schools.

  • There were 1,922 active comprehensive schools and they had 519,800 pupils.
  • Measured by average, the largest educational institutions were located in Uusimaa, where comprehensive schools had an average of 356 pupils.
  • The numbers of students in liberal adult education and basic arts education were added to the database table.
  • There were 327 active general upper secondary schools. In 2025, three general upper secondary schools were closed down or merged with another.
