Total energy consumption grew by 6 per cent in January to June 2026

According to Statistics Finland's preliminary data, total energy consumption in January to June amounted to 688 petajoules (PJ), which was six per cent more than one year before. The cold weather conditions in the early part of the year particularly increased the demand for energy. Total electricity consumption increased by 6.5 per cent from the year before.

  • The consumption of renewable energy totalled 314 petajoule (PJ) in January to June 2026, or four per cent more than one year earlier.
  • The combined consumption of fossil fuels and peat amounted to 174 PJ, or two per cent less than in the year before.
  • Total electricity consumption was 46 terawatt hours (TWh), or 6.5 per cent less than in January to June of last year.
  • Carbon dioxide emissions from the energy use of fuels amounted to 11 million tonnes, which was eight per cent less than in the year before.
