According to Statistics Finland, there were 1,051 vessels in the Finnish registered merchant fleet at the end of 2025, of which 611 belonged to the regular merchant fleet. The number of vessels and combined gross tonnage of both the entire registered merchant fleet and the regular merchant fleet decreased compared to the situation at the end of 2024.

  • At the end of 2025, the gross tonnage of the entire registered merchant fleet had decreased by one per cent and the number of vessels by 51 vessels compared to the situation at the end of 2024.
  • The gross tonnage of the regular merchant fleet went down by one per cent and there were 20 vessels fewer than at the end of 2024.
  • The average age of the regular merchant fleet was 49 years at the end of 2025. The average age decreased by half a year.
  • Measured in terms of the number of vessels, the merchant fleet was at its
    smallest for over 20 years at the end of 2025. However, gross tonnage has remained almost on level with previous years.
  • Starting from October 2024, a registration fee was imposed on vessels in the register.
