Statistics Finland’s archive

Statistics Finland’s archive consists of materials and documents produced by Statistics Finland and its predecessors.

The material contains

  • Original statistical data
  • Basic data of statistics
  • Unpublished table data
  • Statistics Finland’s administrative documents
  • Some committee and private archives.

The archive’s older materials are mainly in paper or microfilm format. Some of the material has been digitised. The digitised materials have been mainly transferred to the National Archives of Finland. For the last couple of decades, the datasets are mainly electronic.

News

Statistics Finland will move to new premises in the Pasila Government Agency Centre in February 2026. At the end of 2025, as well as during the relocation, there will be a delay in the archive’s information services and material deliveries.

Archival materials in microfilm format will not be available between 1 November 2025 and 27 February 2026. During the relocation, our customer and researcher facilities will not be available. The archive’s information services will resume normal operations from the beginning of March 2026.

Use of materials

Archival data stored at Statistics Finland can be studied in the customer area at Statistics Finland by advance booking. You can order the desired material in the customer area. It is possible to take paper copies of the materials. Materials can be delivered electronically on a case-by-case basis, but the delivery will be agreed separately.

Brief provision of information is free of charge. More extensive work is invoiced on an hourly basis.

Charging basis and prices

Restrictions on the use of the material

There are restrictions concerning the use of some materials or they are confidential by law. For example:

  • basic data of the statistics are confidential for a period of 25 years
  • some documents containing personal data are confidential for a period of 100 or 50 years from the death of the person.

The use of such material requires a licence procedure.
