International price comparison: Data collection of food, beverages and tobacco prices

Statistics Finland collects consumer prices representative of Finland for an international price comparison coordinated by Eurostat, the Statistical Office of the EU, a total of six times over a three-year period. The price collection of food, beverages and tobacco utilises transaction data and other centralised data sources. The same data sources are used also for the Consumer price index. The price collection includes a representative sample of stores of different sizes and types. Statistics Finland collects about 14,000 to 15,000 price data and reports average prices for about 450 products. The schedule for the next price surveys is: 2026 spring: services⁠ 2026 autumn: health care and furniture 2027 spring: food, beverages and tobacco 2027 autumn: clothing and footwear 2028 spring: domestic appliances and other household commodities 2028 autumn: vehicles, restaurants and hotels⁠ In addition, prices are collected every two years for machinery and equipment for the price comparison of investment commodities.

Statistics Finland's interviewers collect the majority of price data from companies' websites and from centralized data in use. In exceptional cases, information may be requested by e-mail, telephone or business visits. We aim to minimize the response burden.
