Description
The statistics on providers of education and educational institutions describe the network of education providers and educational institutions that is administered by public authorities, changes that have taken place in it during the year, as well as contain address data for educational institutions and indicate school sizes by data on total number of students per school on 20 September.
Data content
The statistics contain data on the providers of education and on approximately 6,000 educational institutions within the education system. The register contains the data on educational institution concerning e.g. the following: identification code, name, type of educational institution, type of owner, maintainer of educational institution (provider of education), identification code of the provider of education, location of municipality of educational institution, address data, information about merging or abolition, number of students and certain other additional data.
Classifications used
Educational institutions are classified by type of educational institution, industry of provider of education, and various regional divisions.
Data collection methods and data sources
The data in the register of educational institutions are mainly updated with data obtained with the collection of data for statistics on educational institutions. As a rule, the data on providers of education are obtained from the Ministry of Education. Identification codes drawn from Statistics Finland’s Business Register are used as identification codes for the providers of education.

The statistics are produced annually.
Time of completion or release
The data are ready in the early part of the year following the statistical reference year.
Time series
Data on educational institutions are availble from the register of educational institutions starting from 1971.
