Official Statistics of Finland (OSF): Yes
European Statistical System (ESS): Yes

Statistics describe the structure of turnover and services produced in certain branches of industry providing services. The statistics are based on European Parliament and Council regulation (EC) no. 295/2008 concerning structural business statistics. It defines the branches of industry involved, the data content of the statistics and the classification of service products.

Data content

Depending on the industry, the data are inquired either yearly or every two years. The statistics on service industry commodities cover the following industries (industry code in parentheses):

Industries according to the Regulation: Information technology services (582, 62, 631) Legal activities (691) Accounting, bookkeeping and auditing activities; tax consultancy (692) Management consultancy activities (702) Architectural and engineering activities and related technical consultancy (711) Technical testing and analysis (712) Advertising (731) Market research and public opinion polling (732) Employment activities (78)

From statistical year 2020 onwards, the data are also collected concerning the following industries:

Freight transport by road and removal services (494) Water transport (50) Air transport (51) Warehousing and support activities for transportation (52) Postal and courier activities (53) Publishing of books, periodicals and other publishing activities (581) Motion picture, video and television programme production, sound recording and music publishing activities (59) Programming and broadcasting activities (60) Other professional, scientific and technical activities (74) Rental and leasing activities (77) Travel agency, tour operator and other reservation service and related activities (79) Security and investigation activities (80) Services to buildings and landscape activities (81) Office administrative, office support and other business support activities (82) Human health activities (86) Washing and (dry-)cleaning of textile and fur products (9601)

The population of the statistics covers all enterprises with at least 20 employees in the branches of industry defined in the Regulation. However, in some branches the lower limit of 20 employees means that the group of enterprises covers only a small part of the total turnover of the industry, thus not producing a representative view of the structure of the industry (larger enterprises focus on different services from smaller ones). For this reason the limit has been lowered in some industries to cover enterprises employing five persons.

The following data are inquired from enterprises: total turnover, the breakdown of turnover by product according to the CPA (Classification of Products by Activity. In addition, it is requested to specify possible sales to households (private customers) by product category.

Classifications used

Standard industrial classification (TOL 2008) and classification of products by activity (CPA2015).

Data collection methods and data sources

The data are collected directly from enterprises as product-level data are not available from other sources. The sampling frame has been extracted from the Business Register of Statistics Finland.
