Total energy consumption increased by 10 per cent in the three first quarters of 2006
Total energy consumption amounted to 1,090 petajoule in January to September 2006, which is 10 per cent more than in the corresponding period of 2005. The main reason for the growth was the increase in production of condensate electricity. The importance of changes in the amount of condensate electricity is due to the fact, that fuels are used over 2.5 times more in condensate production when compared with the volume of electricity produced. The growth was also influenced significantly by the increased energy consumption of industry from last year's low levels.
When compared to the year before, consumption of coal grew by as much as 68 per cent during the three first quarters of 2006. Here coal also includes coke and blast furnace gas and coke oven gas. Also the use of peat and wood fuels increased considerably from the previous year, by 26 and 20 per cent, respectively. Production of hydro power and net imports of electricity decreased by 17 and 25 per cent, respectively.
The consumption of most energy sources was slightly lower in 2006 than in 2004. Total consumption of energy was roughly at the same level as two years earlier. When compared with the figures of two years ago, a significant increase was seen in net imports and consumption of wood fuels. As a result, the carbon dioxide emissions from production and use of energy were slightly smaller than two years ago, even though there was an increase of as much as 21 per cent from 2005.
