Share of households having had difficulties in making ends meet returned to the level prior to the corona pandemic in 2021

Statistics Finland's statistics on living conditions indicate that 6.6 per cent of households, or nearly 190,000 households, had difficulties or great difficulties in making ends meet in 2021. The share was nearly the same as in 2019, when 6.8 per cent of households had difficulties in making ends meet. In 2020, this share was 7.3 per cent.

Difficulties in making ends meet were most common in one-parent households, of whom 14 per cent reported difficulties or great difficulties in making ends meet. Problems were rarest in two-adult households without children, of whom only 2.8 per cent reported difficulties in making ends meet.

One household in four said that they could not have faced an unexpected large expense in 2021 without borrowing money. More than one-half, 54 per cent, of one-parent households said they could not face an unexpected expense. An unexpected large expense refer to expenses of around EUR 1,200. Nearly 37 per cent of households reported that they were not left with almost any money after paying for all expenses. Single parent households also have weaker saving possibilities than others, as 56 per cent of one-parent households said that they were not able to save money.

Publication of data concerning risk of poverty or social exclusion is postponed

In this connection, data on households' subjective livelihood, quality of housing, health and wellbeing are released from the data of the statistics on living conditions. The indicator for at risk of poverty or social exclusion will be published at a later date. The publication of at risk of poverty or social exclusion (AROPE) will be delayed due to the legislative review of EU-SILC statistics coordinated by Eurostat and the revision of the indicator for at risk of poverty or social exclusion, which is the background study for the statistics on living conditions. The revisions have delayed the production and publication of the data.
