General government EMU debt contracted to EUR 56 billion

General government EMU debt decreased by EUR 6.4 billion in the third quarter of 2008. At the same time the EMU debt fell to its lowest level in the 2000s.

The contraction in the EMU debt came mainly from amortisation of central government debt. The debt of local government, i.e. municipalities and joint municipal boards, remained nearly unchanged. At the end of the third quarter general government consolidated debt stood at EUR 55.8 billion, of which central government debt accounted for EUR 47.5 billion and local government debt for the remainder.

General government debt is consolidated debt, which means that it excludes debt items between sub-sectors.
