Nearly 70 per cent of new passers of the matriculation examination remained outside education

According to Statistics Finland's education statistics, 32 per cent of new passers of the matriculation examination in 2015 immediately continued studies leading to a qualification or degree. Sixteen per cent continued in university education, 11 per cent in university of applied sciences education and five per cent in vocational education. The share of those left outside further studies in the year of passing the matriculation examination grew by one percentage point from the year before, in ten years it has grown from 58 to 68 per cent.

New female passers of the matriculation examination were left outside education more often than men and they also continued to vocational education more often than men. In turn, men continued studies more often than women in university education and in university of applied sciences education. Of female passers of the matriculation examination, 70 per cent remained outside education in the year of the matriculation examination, of men 66 per cent. Fourteen per cent of women continued in university education, ten per cent in university of applied sciences education and seven per cent in vocational education. The respective figures for men were 20, 12 and 2 per cent.

In Mainland Finland, the share of passers of the matriculation examination left outside further studies was highest in Uusimaa, 73 per cent, and lowest in Ostrobothnia, 55 per cent. In Ostrobothnia, 21 per cent of those having passed the matriculation examinations went on to study both in university education and university of applied sciences education. In both groups of education the share was the highest in the country. The share of those continuing studies in vocational education was the highest in the country, nine per cent, for new passers of the matriculation examination in the region of Etelä-Savo.

Seventy-five per cent of new passers of the matriculation examination in 2015 applied to tertiary education, 77 per cent of women and 73 per cent of men. Thirty-seven per cent of new passers of the matriculation examination applied only to university education, nearly every fifth of them applied only to university of applied sciences education and similarly, nearly every fifth applied simultaneously to both university of applied sciences education and university education. The share of new passers of the matriculation examination having applied to tertiary education was slightly lower than in the year before, when it was 77 per cent.
