Inflation slowed down to 0.8 per cent in May

According to Statistics Finland, the year-on-year change in consumer prices, i.e. inflation, was 0.8 per cent in May. In April it was 1.2 per cent. Inflation was primarily slowed by lower prices of liquid fuels.

Consumer prices were put up most in the year by increased prices of housing costs: rents were raised and prices of dwellings and renovation costs and services related to dwellings grew. Inflation was also influenced by higher prices of usage costs of vehicles, catering services and public transport. The rise in consumer prices was curbed most by lower telephone charges and fallen prices of entertainment electronics, home computers and used cars from the previous year.

From April to May, consumer prices fell by 0.3 per cent. The fall was mainly due to higher prices of petrol.

Each mid-month, Statistics Finland interviewers collect around 50,000 prices on 492 commodities from approximately 3,000 outlets for the Consumer Price Index. In addition, some 1,000 items of price data are gathered by centralised collection.
