Inflation 1.0 per cent in December
The year-on-year change in consumer prices, i.e. inflation, calculated by Statistics Finland was 1.0 per cent in last year's December. In November it was 0.9 per cent. The average inflation for the year 2005 was 0.9 per cent.
Consumer prices were pushed up most in the year by higher prices of liquid fuels. Restaurant prices and rents also rose in December from the previous year's corresponding period. Risen charges of cultural and leisure services and higher prices of dwellings and services related to housing also had an impact on inflation. Inflation was curbed by lower telephone charges, fallen prices of vegetables, passenger cars, entertainment electronics and home computers and the fall in interest rates.
From November to December, consumer prices rose by 0.1 per cent. The rise was mainly due to higher prices of fruit and package tours.
Each mid-month, Statistics Finland interviewers collect around 50,000 prices on 492 commodities from approximately 3,000 outlets for the Consumer Price Index. In addition, some 1,000 items of price data are gathered by centralised collection.
