Retail trade sales grew by 2.9 per cent in January from one year ago
Retail trade sales increased by 2.9 per cent in January from January 2012. The volume of sales, from which the impact of prices has been eliminated, rose by 1.5 per cent in retail trade over the same period. In daily consumer goods trade, sales grew by 2.9 per cent year-on-year but in department store trade, sales remained at the same level as in the year before. Wholesale trade sales went up by 2.0 per cent from one year back. By contrast, motor vehicle sales fell by 25.7 per cent over the same period. The drop in motor vehicle sales was partially affected by the strong growth in the comparison month. In total trade, sales decreased by 2.1 per cent in January.

For the whole year 2012, retail trade sales grew by 4.2 per cent and wholesale by 2.8 per cent from 2011. By contrast, motor vehicle sales fell by 6.2 per cent over the same period. The change in motor vehicle tax that entered into force on 1 April affected the development of motor vehicle sales in 2012. In January to December 2012, sales in total trade grew by 2.0 per cent year-on year.
From this release onwards the statistics describing turnover in trade will adopt base year 2010=100.
