Sales in total trade grew by 1.5 per cent year-on-year in September

According to Statistics Finland, retail trade sales remained in September on the level of September 2013. By contrast, sales in daily consumer goods trade grew by 1.4 per cent, while sales in department store trade went down by 2.5 per cent from one year ago. Wholesale trade sales improved by 2.5 per cent and motor vehicle sales by 0.6 per cent from one year previously. All in all, sales in total trade were up by 1.5 per cent on September 2013.

In September, the sales volume in retail trade decreased by 0.8 per cent from one year back. The sales volume in wholesale trade increased by 3.3 per cent and in motor vehicle trade by 0.4 per cent from last year's September. Thus, sales increased in total trade by 1.7 per cent in September from the corresponding period of the previous year. The volume index of sales is calculated by removing the effect of price changes from the value index series.

Total trade sales fell by 0.3 per cent in January to September year-on-year

In the January to September period, sales in both retail trade and wholesale trade contracted by 0.7 per cent compared with the corresponding period of the previous year. By contrast, motor vehicle sales grew by 2.7 per cent from January to September 2013. Total trade sales went down by 0.3 per cent over the corresponding period.

Finland’s retail trade developed weaker than in the eurozone in the third quarter

According to Eurostat, the working day adjusted volume of retail trade sales decreased by 1.0 per cent in Finland in the third quarter of 2014 from the corresponding period of the previous year. By contrast, the sales volume increased by 1.1 per cent in the eurozone and by 1.5 per cent in the entire European Union. In the Nordic countries, the volume of retail trade sales grew most strongly in Sweden, where the growth amounted to 2.4 per cent from the previous year's July to September period.
