Sales in retail trade remained on level with the previous year in October

According to Statistics Finland, retail trade sales in October 2016 were on level with October 2015. Sales of daily consumer goods contracted by 1.6 per cent and sales in department store trade by 0.7 per cent. In turn, sales in wholesale trade fell in October by 0.5 per cent from twelve months earlier. In contrast, sales in motor vehicle trade grew by 2.9 per cent from one year back. Sales increased in total trade by 0.1 per cent from October 2015.

Sales volume of retail trade increased by 0.8 per cent in October year-on-year

The volume of retail trade sales grew by 0.8 per cent from October 2015. Sales volume in motor vehicle trade grew by 2.9 per cent in October. In turn, the sales volume in wholesale trade fell by 1.5 per cent from one year back. Thus, the sales volume in total trade declined by 0.2 per cent in October.

The volume index of sales is calculated by removing the effect of price changes from the value index series.

Sales in motor vehicle trade grew by 9.2 per cent in January to October

Sales in total trade increased by 0.7 per cent in January to October from January to October 2015. In the corresponding period, motor vehicle sales went up by 9.2 per cent and retail trade sales by 0.7 per cent from one year previously. In turn, sales in wholesale trade fell by 1.3 per cent in January to October from January to October 2015.

The reported annual changes in trade sales and sales volumes are not seasonally or trading day adjusted, which means that the effects of public holidays are not considered. The opening hours of retail shops were deregulated starting from 1 January 2016 after which some retail shops have extended their opening hours.
