Retail trade sales grew by 1.0 per cent year-on-year in February
According to Statistics Finland, retail trade sales grew by 1.0 per cent in February from February 2016. Among retail trade industries, daily consumer goods sales grew by 0.4 per cent, whereas sales in department stores contracted by 0.9 per cent. Sales in wholesale trade grew in February by 3.0 per cent from twelve months earlier. Over the same period, sales in motor vehicle trade decreased by 1.0 per cent. Sales increased in total trade by 1.7 per cent from February 2016.

The volume of retail trade sales grew by 0.3 per cent in February from February 2016. By contrast, sales volume in wholesale trade went down by 3.2 per cent and in motor vehicle trade by 1.3 per cent in February. Thus, sales volume decreased in total trade by 2.2 per cent compared with February 2016.
The volume index of sales is calculated by removing the effect of price changes from the value index series.
Retail trade sales grew by 2.4 per cent in January to February
In the January to February period, sales grew by 2.4 per cent in retail trade and by 7.9 per cent in wholesale trade compared to January to February 2016. In the corresponding period, motor vehicle sales went up by 5.0 per cent from one year previously. Total trade sales grew by 5.7 per cent in January to February from January to February 2016.
The reported annual changes in trade sales and sales volumes are not seasonally or trading day adjusted, which means that the effects of public holidays are not considered. In February, the development of the sectors of trade was in part affected by the leap day in the comparison year 2016.
Changes in the Tax Administration's self-assessed tax data do not have an effect on the data of turnover indices for January 2017
The effects of the changes in the Tax Administration's self-assessed tax data have been analysed in Statistics Finland’s turnover indices. Based on the analyses, no significant changes for statistics production were observed in the value added tax reporting of enterprises. More about this under Changes in these statistics .
