Domestic banks’ net income from financial operations contracted in the fourth quarter
In the fourth quarter of 2010, domestic banks’ net income from financial operations amounted to EUR 620 million. Their net income from financial operations contracted by 24 per cent from the respective quarter of the year before. However, compared with the previous quarter their net income from financial operations went down by 11 per cent. These data derive from Statistics Finland’s Financial statement statistics on credit institutions.

Commission income rose slightly in the last quarter. Its year-on-year growth amounted to five per cent. Net gains from securities and foreign currency transactions increased by 70 per cent when compared with the fourth quarter of 2009. Interest expenses went up by 52 per cent from one year ago.
Recorded impairment losses on loans and other commitments amounted to EUR 66 million in the fourth quarter. This is 42 per cent less than in the previous quarter and 57 per cent less than twelve months back. Impairment losses have last been on this level in the third quarter of 2008.
The net operating profit of domestic banks amounted to EUR 548 million in the last quarter, which is 31 per cent more than one year earlier. The aggregate value of the balance sheets was EUR 417 billion. The balance sheets grew by 20 per cent year-on-year. The share of own equity in the total of the balance sheets was five per cent.
