Nights spent by foreign tourists in Finland fell by 9 per cent in July

The number of recorded nights spent by foreign tourists at Finnish accommodation establishments in July 2009 was 656,000, which was 9 per cent lower than in July 2008. The number of nights spent by resident tourists was 2.2 million, which was just under 2 per cent lower than last year. The total number of overnight stays decreased by 3.5 per cent from the previous year. Accommodation establishments recorded a total of 2.9 million of them in July 2009. These figures are preliminary data from Statistics Finland's statistics on accommodation establishments and they have been collected from accommodation establishments with at least 10 rooms, cottages, or caravan pitches with electricity connection, and youth hostels.

Nights spent at Finnish accommodation establishments have been decreasing throughout the current year and the same trend continued in July. Overnight stays of British visitors were the only ones that increased from last year, by 6 per cent, and the number of nights spent by Italian visitors remained almost unchanged. The numbers of overnight stays recorded at accommodation establishments for visitors from all other most important inbound tourism countries were considerably lower than twelve months earlier. Swedish tourists were the largest group of foreign visitors with nearly 116,000 nights spent. However, this was 12 per cent less than in the year before. Russian visitors came next and accommodation establishments recorded for them just under 95,000 overnight stays, which was 10 per cent less than one year earlier. Germans came third with 85,000 nights spent, which was 7 per cent down on July 2008. However, the largest reductions in overnight stays were recorded for visitors from the United States (-28%) and Estonia (-25%). The number of nights spent by visitors from Norway also contracted strongly. Their overnight stays decreased by nearly one-fifth from July 2008.

The standard industrial classification TOL 2008 was introduced in these Tourism Statistics starting from data concerning January 2009. The introduction has caused minor changes to data on the number of establishments in hotels statistics. Further information about the TOL 2008 classification is available at the TOL 2008 section on Statistics Finland's website.
