Overnight stays at accommodation establishments increased by 4 per cent in August

The total number of overnight stays at Finnish accommodation establishments rose to nearly 2.1 million in August 2010, which was four per cent up on one year previously. The number of nights spent by domestic tourists was just under 1.5 million, up by five per cent from one year back. Overnight stays by foreign tourists increased by two per cent and their total number was recorded as nearly 622,000. These figures are preliminary data from Statistics Finland's statistics on accommodation establishments and they have been collected from accommodation establishments with at least 10 rooms, cottages, or caravan pitches with electricity connection, and youth hostels.

Russians were the largest group of foreign tourists in August with good 108,000 overnight stays. The number was 11 per cent higher than in August 2009. Germans came next with 83,000 nights spent, with an increase of 2 per cent from the previous year. Swedish visitors were the third largest group with good 74,000 overnight stays. The number of nights they spent at Finnish accommodation establishments was seven per cent higher than one year earlier. Among the most important countries of inbound tourism into Finland, overnight stays of visitors from Estonia increased most, or by 24 per cent, and good 21,000 overnight stays were recorded for them. By contrast, the numbers of overnight stays by visitors from the Netherlands and Italy declined sharply in August. The number of overnight stays by visitors from the Netherlands was around one-fifth down and that of visitors from Italy 13 per cent down on August 2009.
