Nights spent by resident tourists in Finland increased by 12 per cent in March 2021

Overnight stays by resident tourists at Finnish accommodation establishments increased by 11.7 per cent from last year and 0.82 million nights were recorded for them in March 2021. Overnight stays by resident tourists increased outside Greater Helsinki by 21.5 per cent but in Greater Helsinki they declined by 37.5 per cent. Overnight stays by foreign tourists declined by 82.1 per cent and 0.05 million overnight stays were recorded for non-resident tourists. Finnish accommodation establishments recorded a total of 0.86 million overnight stays, which was 13.3 per cent lower than one year before. These figures are preliminary data from Statistics Finland’s statistics on accommodation establishments and they have been collected from accommodation establishments with at least 20 beds or caravan pitches with electricity connection.

Germans biggest group of non-residents also in March 2021

Overnight stays did not increase from any of the most important countries. The smallest drop was seen in overnight stays by Italians, down by 3,000 nights. The biggest drop was seen in overnight stays by Germans, down by 26,500 nights. Their overnight stays were 75.4 per cent down on March 2020.

The biggest group of non-resident tourists were Germans with 8,700 overnight stays. The second largest group was Estonians with 6,300 overnight stays. The third largest group was Swedes with 3,100 overnight stays, and fourth were French with 1,900 overnight stays.

The regional overnight stays are developing in different directions

Examined by region, overnight stays increased most in relative terms in Central Ostrobothnia, by 46.7 per cent, and second most in South Savo, by 32.3 per cent. By contrast, the overall number of overnight stays declined most in relative terms in Uusimaa, by 50.7 per cent and second most in Southwest Finland, by 42.9 per cent.

Accommodation establishments in Uusimaa recorded 21,000 overnight stays by non-resident tourists and accommodation establishments in Lapland 10,000. Overnight stays by non-resident tourists declined by 74.5 per cent in Uusimaa. In Lapland, overnight stays by non-resident tourists declined by 91.8 per cent from one year ago. The share of Uusimaa in all overnight stays by foreign visitors was 44 per cent and that of Lapland 21 per cent.

Overnight stays in hotels by resident tourists increased by 4 per cent in March 2021

The total number of nights spent in hotels was 0.62 million, which was 20.5 per cent less than twelve months earlier. Overnight stays by foreign tourists declined by 81.4 per cent and hotels recorded a total of 42,000 overnight stays for them. Recorded nights spent by resident tourists in hotels numbered 0.58 million. The number was 4.3 per cent higher than in March 2020.

Among the regions, the highest occupancy rates of hotel rooms were measured in Kainuu, 60.3 per cent, and in North Ostrobothnia, 36.0 per cent. In Helsinki, the hotel room occupancy rate was 15.2 per cent, 23.2 per cent in Tampere, 23.1 per cent in Turku, 34.2 per cent in Oulu and 17.8 per cent in Rovaniemi.

In March 2021, the realised average price of a hotel room was EUR 98.40 per day for the whole country. Twelve months earlier, it was EUR 115.54. There was a total of 48,371 hotel rooms available in Finland, which was 5,373 fewer than in March 2020.

Total number of nights spent by resident tourists decreased by 46 per cent in January to March 2021

In January to March 2021, a total of 2.45 million nights were spent in Finnish accommodation establishments. This was 45.8 per cent less than in the corresponding period one year earlier. In all, 2.29 million overnight stays were recorded for resident tourists and 0.16 million for non-resident tourists. The number of nights spent by resident tourists declined by 21.7 per cent and nights spent by non-resident tourists declined by 90.1 from the previous year.

Overnight stays declined from all of the most important countries of inbound tourism to Finland. The smallest drop was seen in overnight stays by Norwegians. Overnight stays by them declined by 19,400 nights. The biggest drop was seen in overnight stays by Russians, down by 234,800 nights. Their overnight stays were 97.6 per cent down on January to March 2020.

The biggest group of non-resident tourists were Germans with 23,000 overnight stays. The second largest group was Estonians with 23,000 overnight stays. The third largest group was Swedes with 11,000 overnight stays , and fourth were U.S. tourists with 7,000 overnight stays. The fifth largest group was Dutch tourists (6,000 nights), sixth was French (6,000 nights), seventh Russians (6,000 nights) and eight was Britons (5,000 nights).

Overnight stays by resident tourists still at a clearly lower level than in March 2019

The recovery of tourism is illustrated by comparison with the year before the corona crisis started in 2020. For leisure trips, overnight stays by resident tourists were roughly 30 per cent lower than in March 2019. Overnight stays by resident business travellers were roughly 50 per cent less. Overnight stays by non-resident leisure travellers were 95 per cent less than two years ago and 85 per cent less by non-resident business travellers .
