Turnover in service industries increased by 4.9 per cent year-on-year in January to March

According to Statistics Finland, turnover in service industries grew by 4.9 per cent in January to March from the corresponding time period of the year before. The biggest service industry, transportation and storage, increased its turnover by 5.8 per cent from one year back. Development was strongest in administrative and support service activities (+9.1%). Professional, scientific and technical activities reached a good growth of 6.6 per cent. Services are here examined exclusive of trade.

The 5.8 per cent growth in turnover in transportation and storage was slightly brisker than in the corresponding period of last year. In that period, growth had reached 5.2 per cent. Among industries, growth was strongest in storage, warehousing and support activities for transportation (+7%) and in land and rail transport (+3.9%). The 2.4 per cent drop in water transport, in turn, slowed down the development in the transport industry.

Renting and leasing activities (+16.6%) and employment activities (+12.5%) brought growth to administrative and support service activities. Travel agency, tour operator and other reservation services also reached a good growth of 9.2 per cent.

Among the sub-industries of professional, scientific and technical activities, growth was most rapid for other professional, scientific and technical activities (+10.3%). Scientific research and development also boosted the industry (+6.2%). Growth in advertising and market research was more subdued than before (+2.7%).

Hotel and restaurant activities also continued to grow (+4.8%) even though the growth rate slowed down from one year ago when growth reached 7.6 per cent. Hotel activities grew (+5.4%) slightly faster than restaurant activities (+4.6%).
