Cubic volume covered by granted building permits decreased by 13 per cent in September

In September 2010, building permits were granted for a total of 3.2 million cubic metres, which is 13 per cent less than one year ago. This is indicated by Statistics Finland’s preliminary data from statistics on building and dwelling production.

Over the January to September period, the cubic volume covered by granted building permits grew by five per cent from the previous year. The cubic volume covered by permits for residential buildings grew by 40 per cent and that of permits for public service buildings by 19 per cent. By contrast, the cubic volume covered by permits for commercial and office buildings decreased by 18 per cent from the respective time period of the year before.

In September, the cubic volume covered by permits for residential buildings diminished by 10 per cent and the volume covered by permits for residential blocks of flats in particular fell by 40 per cent from the previous year’s September. The cubic volume of permits for detached houses went up by nearly one-quarter and the volume of permits for terraced houses by good one-fifth. The cubic volume covered by permits for other than residential buildings diminished year-on-year. Growth was only recorded in the cubic volume of permits for agricultural buildings.

In September 2010, building permits were granted for 2,698 new dwellings, which is 17 per cent fewer than one year earlier. The number of permits granted for detached and terraced houses went up by good one-quarter. Permits for residential blocks of flats decreased by one-third.

Volume of newbuilding went up by nearly 30 per cent in September

In September 2010, the constant-price value or the volume of ongoing building production was up by nearly 30 per cent year-on-year. The volume of residential building increased most, or by 63 per cent from one year before. The strong growth was due to the exceptionally low volume of residential building in 2009.

In residential building, strong growth continued especially in the volume of construction of terraced houses. Volumes have also grown briskly in the construction of residential blocks of flats and detached houses during the current year. The volume of other than residential building construction grew by 6.8 per cent from September 2009.

The largest fall in volume of nearly 21 per cent. The volume of office building construction also decreased by 11 per cent year-on-year.
