Cubic volume covered by granted building permits decreased by nearly 20 per cent in October

In October 2011, building permits were granted for a total of around 2.5 million cubic metres, which is 19.9 per cent less than one year ago. This is indicated by Statistics Finland’s preliminary data from statistics on building and dwelling production.

The cubic volume covered by permits for residential buildings went down by 23 per cent year-on-year. Among types of buildings, the cubic volume of permits granted for blocks of flats fell most, by 30 per cent.

The cubic volume of permits granted for other than residential building construction went down by 18 per cent from October 2010.

The cubic volume of permits granted for industrial and warehouse buildings fell by 34 per cent from one year back. The fall is explained by the considerable decrease in the cubic volume of permits granted for industrial buildings.

The cubic volume of permits granted for both public service buildings and commercial and office buildings went down in October by 15 per cent year-on-year.

In October 2011, building permits were granted for 2,190 new dwellings, which is 22 per cent fewer than one year earlier.

Volume of newbuilding went up by 2 per cent in October

In October 2011, the constant-price value or the volume of ongoing building production was up by 2.1 per cent year-on-year. The volume of residential building construction increased by 1.7 per cent from one year before.

The growth in the volume of residential building construction has slowed down since spring. In October, the volume of construction of residential blocks of flats grew by 16 per cent and that of terraced houses by nearly eight per cent. The volume of construction of detached houses in turn went down by 4.5 per cent from one year back.

The volume of construction of industrial and warehouse buildings increased most, by 31 per cent from one year earlier. The volume of industrial building construction grew by nearly 24 per cent and that of warehouse building by good 44 per cent from October 2010.

The volume of public service buildings fell by over 14 per cent in October and that of commercial and office buildings by three per cent. The volume of other than residential building construction grew by almost three per cent from 2010.
