Cubic volume of granted building permits decreased year-on-year

According to Statistics Finland, in June to August 2019, building permits were granted for a total of 10.2 million cubic metres, which is 4.3 per cent lower than in the corresponding period one year ago. Examined by building type, the cubic volume covered by permits granted for residential buildings decreased most. The cubic volume in other building types also declined, only the cubic volume covered by building permits for commercial and office buildings increased during the period.

Cubic volume granted for residential buildings still lower than one year earlier

In June to August, cubic metres covered by permits for residential buildings amounted to 2.8 million cubic metres, which is 16.6 per cent less than one year earlier. In residential building construction, the cubic volume for all building types decreased year-on-year. The cubic volume covered by permits for residential blocks of flats decreased by 19.7 per cent, that for terraced houses by 14.4 per cent and that for detached houses by 11.8 per cent.

In June to August of 2019, building permits were granted in total for 9,243 dwellings, one year earlier the corresponding figure was 11,244 dwellings. The number of building permits granted for residential buildings fell by 17.8 per cent from the previous year.

Volume of building production decreased

The volume, or the constant-price value of ongoing building production, decreased by 3.5 per cent in June to August 2019 from the year before. The volume of construction of residential buildings declined in the period by 9.0 per cent and that of other than residential building construction, in turn, increased by 1.3 per cent. Measured by volume, 1.0 per cent more building projects than one year earlier were started in the same period. The number of residential building starts was 3.9 per cent higher than one year ago.
