Cubic volume of granted building permits increased in November

According to Statistics Finland, in September to November 2019, building permits were granted for a total of 9.5 million cubic metres, which was 5.9 per cent more than one year ago. The cubic volume grew most in public service buildings, where 47.8 per cent more building permits were granted than one year earlier. The cubic volume covered by permits granted for commercial and office buildings also rose significantly, by 39.4 per cent. The cubic volume granted for residential buildings fell from one year back.

Cubic volume granted for for residential buildings lower than one year earlier

During September to November, cubic metres covered by permits for residential buildings amounted to 2.7 million cubic metres, which was 8.5 per cent lower than one year earlier. In residential building, the cubic volume granted for residential blocks of flats went up by 0.2 per cent from one year back. The cubic volume of terraced houses contracted by 13.3 per cent and that of detached houses by 21.2 per cent.

In September to November, building permits were granted in total for 8,785 dwellings, the number falling by 9.9 per cent from the previous year.

Volume of building production decreased further

The volume, or the constant-price value of ongoing building production, decreased by 5.1 per cent during September to November 2019 from the year before. The volume of construction of residential buildings declined in the period by 11.2 per cent and that of other than residential building construction, in turn, increased by 0.5 per cent. Measured by volume, 3.8 per cent more building projects than one year earlier were started in the same period. The number of residential building starts was 0.6 per cent higher than one year ago.
