In September 2011 Finnish residents travelled to Estonia, Sweden or the Mediterranean
A great number of Finnish residents made a trip abroad to Estonia, Sweden or Mediterranean countries in September. Finnish residents made 176,000 leisure trips or cruises with overnight stays to Estonia and Sweden, which is 56 per cent more than in the corresponding period of one year ago. Finnish residents were also keen to travel to the Mediterranean to where the number of trips went up by 78 per cent from last year. Domestic leisure trips with paid accommodation went down by 11 per cent in September when compared with the respective month of the previous year.

In September Finnish residents made 380,000 overnight leisure trips abroad. In all, 304,000 of them included one or more overnights in the country of destination, twenty-six per cent in Estonia and five per cent in Sweden. Most of the cruises including overnights on board only were to Sweden and Estonia.
Finnish residents made 1.5 million leisure trips in Finland. This is 11 per cent up on the corresponding period in the year before. Most of the trips, or 1.2 million, included free accommodation at one’s own free-time residence, with relatives or friends or in some other type of free accommodation.
These preliminary data are based on Statistics Finland’s Finnish Travel Survey for which 1,382 persons aged 15 to 74 permanently resident in Finland were interviewed in October.
The final annual data on the Finnish Travel Survey are published on the homepage of the statistics in May following the statistical reference year.
