In January to April 2014, Finns travelled to Lapland, Estonia and Spain

According to Statistics Finland's preliminary data Finns travelled eagerly to Estonia and Spain in January to April 2014. Leisure trips abroad increased by six per cent from the respective period of the previous year. Nineteen per cent fewer domestic trips with paid accommodation were made than one year earlier. However, Lapland maintained its popularity among Finns and one per cent more trips were made to Lapland than in the corresponding period last year.

In the first four months of 2014, Finnish residents aged 15 to 84 made 10.6 million trips when all domestic and foreign leisure trips, as well as business and professional trips are included. In addition to trips with overnight stay, the number also includes same-day trips abroad.

6.4 million domestic leisure trips with overnight stay were made in the January to April period. Of these, 4.9 million were trips with free accommodation. Trips with overnight stay at paid accommodation numbered 1.5 million and their most popular destinations were located in Lapland, Uusimaa and Pirkanmaa. The number of trips with paid accommodation was 19 per cent lower than in January to April of the previous year.

March was the most popular month for travelling in the early part of the year, as then, 481,000 domestic trips with paid accommodation were made. Nearly 30 per cent of these trips made in March were to Lapland.

Inclusive of trips with overnight stay in the destination country, cruises and same-day trips, leisure trips abroad numbered 2.4 million in the January to April period. A total of 1,793,000 leisure trips abroad included overnight stay in the destination country. In January to April, 363,000 cruises with overnight stay on board only were made. The cruises were mostly headed to Sweden and Estonia. Same-day trips abroad numbered 249,000 in January to April. Of these, two out of three were day cruises to Estonia.

During the first four months of the year, leisure trips to our neighbouring countries numbered 681,000 to Estonia and 417,000 to Sweden. Trips to Sweden with overnight stay in the destination country and overnight cruises decreased from one year ago. Estonia is the number one favourite of Finns throughout the year and leisure trips to Estonia increased by 16 per cent in January to April.

In the early part of the year, 308,000 trips were headed to Spain, of which 64 per cent to the Canary Islands. Altogether, 97,000 trips were made to the warmth in Thailand. The number of trips to the Canary Islands increased by 35 per cent and to Thailand by 38 per cent from the corresponding period of the previous year.

Trips with overnight stay in the destination country increased by 10 per cent from last year's January to April period. April was the most popular month for travelling in the early part of the year, as then the number of trips abroad with overnight stay in the destination country was 564,000.

In addition to leisure trips, 1.2 million domestic business or professional trips were made. Business or professional trips abroad (inclusive of trips with overnight stay in the destination country, cruises and same-day trips) numbered 0.6 million. Domestic business trips went down by 14 per cent but business trips abroad went up by 13 per cent from last year.

These data derive from Statistics Finland's Finnish Travel survey for which altogether 5,310 persons aged 15 to 84 were interviewed in February, March, April and May. Until 2011, data were collected from those aged 15 to 74.
