Research and development expenditure made an upturn
According to Statistics Finland, research and development expenditure amounted to EUR 6.2 billion in 2017. Expenditure increased by EUR 247 million from the year before. Growth occurred in all sectors, in business enterprises it was three per cent, in the government sector eight per cent and in the higher education sector five per cent compared to 2016. The contraction in research expenditure that lasted for five years came to an end, last time growth occurred in 2011.
The GDP share of R&D expenditure in 2017 was 2.76 per cent, in other words in practice on level with 2016. Research and development expenditure is estimated to grow in 2018 by about EUR 140 million and the GDP share is estimated to be 2.70 per cent.
