Research and development expenditure growing steadily

According to Statistics Finland, research and development expenditure amounted to EUR 6.4 billion in 2018. Expenditure increased by EUR 265 million from the year before which means a four per cent increase. Growth occurred in all sectors, in enterprises it was five per cent, in the government sector two per cent, and in the higher education sector four per cent compared to 2017. The growth rate of R&D expenditure was at the same level as in the year before.

The GDP share of R&D expenditure in 2018 was 2.74 per cent, at the same level as in 2017. In 2019, R&D expenditure is estimated to grow by EUR 110 million and the GDP share is estimated to be 2.71 per cent.
