Turnover in manufacturing up by 1.2 per cent year-on-year in the first quarter of 2012

According to Statistics Finland, in the first quarter of 2012 turnover in manufacturing was 1.2 per cent up on the corresponding quarter of the year before. In the latest examination period, domestic sales grew by 4.8 per cent while export turnover contracted by 1.4 per cent from one year ago.

The sub-industries of manufacturing were evenly divided into both contracted and grown ones. The growth was strongest in the chemical industry (11.0%), the food industry (7.9%) and in water supply, sewerage, waste management and remediation activities (4.5%). The largest contractions were seen in the electronic and electrical industry (-9.1%), in electricity, gas, steam, etc., supply (-7.4%) and in the forest industry (-5.5%). Turnover also fell in the metal industry (-2.1 %) and in the textile, clothing and leather industry (-1.8%).

The index of turnover in industry describes enterprises whose main industry is manufacturing. The calculation of the indices is based on the Tax Administration’s value added tax data which are supplemented with data obtained with Statistics Finland’s sales inquiry. The monthly turnovers of manufacturing enterprises can vary considerably, especially in the metal industries. The variation is mainly due to invoicing practices. The final invoice for major machinery deliveries and projects may be recorded in the sales of one month, even if the delivery had required the work of several months or years.
