Finland's preliminary population figure 5,428,570 at the end of January

According to Statistics Finland's preliminary data, Finland's population at the end of January was 5,428,570. Finland's population grew by 1,450 persons during January, which is 250 persons more than in the preliminary data for the corresponding period of the year before. The main reason for the population increase was migration gain from abroad: the number of immigrants was 1,300 higher than that of emigrants. Natural population growth, or excess of births to deaths, was 150 persons.

According to the preliminary statistics for January, 2,550 persons immigrated to Finland from abroad and 1,250 persons emigrated from Finland. The number of immigrants was 350 higher and the number of emigrants 100 lower than in the corresponding period of the previous year. In all, 650 of the immigrants and 950 of the emigrants were Finnish citizens.

During January 4,850 children were born, which is 150 children less than in the corresponding period of 2012. The number of deaths was 4,700, which is 50 higher than one year earlier.

According to the preliminary data, the number of inter-municipal migrations totalled 19,650 during January. Compared with the previous January, the decrease was 400 migrations according to the municipal division of 2013.
